When Reading Isn't Called For

I have indulged my more emotional sensibilities this past week and have engaged in some most fascinating reading. However, as the week draws to a close I think once again I need to put the book down; for despite the intrigue some things are just meant to happen and be said without a whole lot of reading.

Take learning to drive a stick shift, one of the areas that is currently on my top five things to learn in the next six months. I have read how to drive a stick shift. In the Modern Girls Guide to Life they detail how to shift gears, at what approximate speed you should shift and into what gear. The book describes how you should keep your foot on the accelerator and clutch (I think). But I don’t think reading about driving a stick shift is going to make me learn how to drive a stick shift, to really know how to shift and into what gear I should shift. Until I actually sit behind the wheel and actually use both my left and right foot to drive, I am not going to know and I think this same reasoning is true for many areas of my life.
