All I need to know about life I can glean from Disney movie songs...at least this following playlist.
Whole New World: Aladdin asks Jasmine right before they sing this song, if she trusts him and at her affirmative away they fly on the magic carpet: soaring, tumbling, free wheeling in the star lit sky. Singing of seeing the world, a whole new world because they are together - a new world, with new horizons to explore and pursue together
Circle Of Life: well, the title does say it doesn't it? The circle of life -- the passage of birth, life, and death. The interaction with community, we don't exist as individual entities but as a whole creation - God didn't make us to live without depending on not only each other, but also on the animals and plants he too created.
Beauty & The Beast: "Ever just the same, Ever a surprise, Ever as before, Ever just as sure, As the sun will rise" - who doesn't like the tale of Beauty and the Beast?! In the Disney version I've always liked the beast better than when he actually turns back into a human. I like the untamed version and within that the beast changes, and it is with the Beast that Belle falls in love with. I like it because Belle doesn't set out to change the Beast, and it is Belle's beauty and grace that cause a change of heart in the Beast. I like the vision that that this song evokes in thinking as the lyrics above suggest - that while things may seem the same they are a surprise. The sameness and surety of love is a tale as old of time, yet it still takes one by surprise.
Under The Sea: The Little Mermaid, one of my faves although wrought with terrible lessons (a rant for another day). But this song encourages us to basically live content with where we are at, and what we have. Sebastian sings of being under the sea as so much better than being on land, and he is exhorting Ariel to be content.
Hakuna Matata: well it does mean 'no worries' and what can be wrong with a lesson such as that!!
Kiss The Girl: The Little Mermaid again -- poor Prince Eric, if only he hadn't taken his time making his mind up he wouldn't have had to fight Ursula and nearly drown to death -- but no, he didn't kiss the girl in time. The lyrics speak of how "the boy" is too shy and that he needs to "just kiss the girl" and well, can I just say that I am very thankful that my very own frog, wait I mean prince ultimately wasn't too sure and did kiss "the girl!"
A random posting for sure, but I've been mulling around these songs for weeks -- and I like how they "speak" lessons of life and they are Disney Movie songs -- just goes to show how I spend my days. As much as I like these songs, I do have many misgivings about Disney Movies, and could write much concerning the basics of the stories, but I'll save that for another day -- I have one more post to write and then dreamland here I come.
